Things to Do

There are plenty of things to do within the locality. Here are some recommendations for things to do right on your doorstep, or within driving distance of Lough Derg House.

Nenagh Tourist Office

If you would like to find out all about what to do in the area a visit to the Nenagh Tourist Office is a must!  It is situated right in the heart of the town at Banba Square.

Here you will meet really friendly staff with a wealth of knowledge.

 

Go eBiking! (and Kayaking)

Local eBike provider Rob Queen from Lough Derg eBike Tours can provide you with an eBike rental, guide you as part of a group, or take you out on a guided tour tailored to your interests.  You can contact rob at: loughdergebiketours.ie  For Lough Derg House B&B guests, Rob offers a 15% discount on guided tours. John Hanley Woollen Mills

The John Hanley Woollen Mills is a 5 minute drive from Dromineer and is a working local woollen mills.  It has a beautiful gift shop offering locally made blankets, clothing and other Irish gifts. And the river crossing next to the Mills is very beautiful too.

Explore by Foot

There are a number of great hiking options to be enjoyed during your stay. For example, the Lough Derg Way is a 64km walking route from Dromineer to Dromineer, and it starts from right outside Lough Derg House. The walk ranges from gentle paths through farmland and back roads to the big climb over the top of Tountinna, and features many of the best views between Dromineer and Killaloe.

There are Walking Tours of Nenagh every week, taking in the key sights of historical interest in the town in a guided one-hour tour.

At Two Mile Gate near Killaloe, you can hike up into Ballycuggeran Woods, getting great views as you hike through oak woodlands.

Take a splash

During the summer months Aquasplash in Dromineer is a great option for the kids & adults!

In addition to the inflatable water park (pictured), Aquasplash offer SUP paddle boarding, kayaking, banana boats/inflatables and water skiing.

Enjoy a Lough Derg cruise from Dromineer

Enjoy a family river cruise from Killaloe

For all the family, river cruises from Killaloe are a great way to see the Lough while relaxing with a drink. More information can be found at: Killaloe River Cruises 

Relax with a sauna

There are two saunas operating in the area. 

Lakeside Sauna has two mobile saunas and parks up at various spots around the lake shore, including Killaloe, Youghal and Skehana. The brave can enjoy a dip in the lake before unwinding in the woodfired sauna. Or you can skip the ‘bracing’ dip and just relax! Lakeside Sauna also offer ‘Yoga and Sauna’ or ‘eBike and Sauna’ sessions. More information can be found at: Lakeside Sauna 

In addition, Ritual Sauna have recently opened at Dromineer and offer a woodfired sauna and coffees.

Golf

There are a number of Golf Courses in the area, including Portumna, East Clare and Nenagh

Lough Derg Yacht Club

Lough Derg Yacht Club is right next door to Lough Derg House. It was founded in 1835, making it one of the oldest yacht clubs in the world. In the 19th Century, the boating activities on the lake made Dromineer “The place to be”, particularly on a summer Sunday. There are plenty of us who would say it still is!

The club offers fishing trips as well as sailing training fro both adults and children.

Wild Swimming

There are a number of places around Lough Derg where you can go swimming in the lake, including Blue Flag beaches at Portumna and Mount Shannon, and a very popular swimming spot at Two Mile Gate. 

Closer to Dromineer, many people go swimming at Skehanagh and Youghal (pictured), and there is a swimming spot at Dromineer itself, so you can go on foot if you bring your dry robe.

Horse Riding

There are several places around Lough Derg where you can go horse riding. See Discover Lough Derg for details.

The Nenagh Equestrian Centre offer riding lessons in the local area.

Mountain Biking

The Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails offers 98km of trails in County Limerick. Here you can rent a bike or bring your own, and explore trails catering to all levels of ability and experience.
